Tianjin Astor Hotel
Facing the beautiful Haihe River and backed by the Financial Street, Tianjin Astor Hotel offers luxurious facilities and an elegant environment. It is known as China’s first foreign-related hotel. After 136 years of history, the hotel still retains the style of British classical architecture and the characteristics of European medieval rural architecture. Hoover also lived here for an extended period. The hotel still preserves Sun Yat-sen’s silver cigarette tray, Puyi’s tableware, and the phonograph that Zhang Xueliang once listened to. When the Astor Hotel was first built, it was a brick-and-wood structure with a corrugated iron roof in the style of an English bungalow. In the summer of 1886 (the 12th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty), it was rebuilt and expanded into a three-story classical open-style luxury building with European rural charm, made of brick and wood and featuring a sloped roof. In 1924, a four-story European-style reinforced concrete building was added to the north side of the old building. With a total floor area of 12,610 square meters, it preserves cultural relics such as Renaissance-style carved classical sofas and an early “Otis” elevator. It is not only one of the earliest surviving buildings in the former British concession, but also the first foreign-invested grand hotel in modern China.
After enduring the decline of the Qing Dynasty, the changes of the Beiyang government, the rise and fall of the Nationalist government, the disaster of Japanese puppet occupation, and finally the founding of New China and the march toward rejuvenation, the Astor has weathered the storms for more than a century and a half and remains prosperous. It is both a witness and a microcosm of modern Chinese history, and also a front-line window into Tianjin’s reform and opening up. It is a nationally protected cultural relic site and has also earned the honor of being a “Time-Honored Chinese Brand.” Tianjin Astor Hotel also houses the Tianjin Astor Museum, which showcases the hotel’s long history and important events in Tianjin’s development.
